英国美景（散文）

      The beauty of our country ——or at least all of its south of North of Scotland——is as hard to define as it is easy to enjoy . Remembering other and larger countries ,we see at once that one of its charms is that it is immensely varied within a small range .We have here no vast mountain ranges , no boundless plains , no miles of forest , and are deprived of the grandeur that may accompany these things . But we have superb variety . A great deal of everything is packed into a little space . I suspect that we are faintly conscious of the fact that this is a smallish island , with the sea always round the corner .We know that everything has to be neatly packed into a small space . Nature , we feel , has carefully adjusted things ——mountains , plains , rivers , lakes —— to the scale of the island itself .

     我们国家的美景——至少北苏格兰南部的美景——是尽可畅游而难以描摹的。想一下其他的较大的国家，我们立刻就会发现我国的魅力在于尺寸之地上有万千气象。我们没有广袤的群山，一望无际的平原，也没有绵亘千里的森林，与之相伴的宏伟气势从未光顾过。但是我国有千变万化的景物，诸多景物星罗棋布于寸土之上。我猜想，我们一直隐隐意识到一个事实——这是一个被海水团团围住的小岛，在小地方必须把所有的东西都摆放整齐。我们感到造物已经根据岛的大小仔细安排了一切——山脉，平原，河流，湖泊。
